RBC Radio. European Union and Oxfam have jointly launched today a three-year project that will revive the fishing industry in Somalia
The project is intended to enhance fishing in Puntland and Somaliland regions. In the near future, the joint organizations have outlined their anticipation the project will expand to south and central regions of Somalia.
In a press conference jointly held by European Union and Oxfam, the two organizations stated that Somalia has one of the richest waters in Africa in terms of fish and also has very long coastline.
Somali fishermen men are said to have no appropriate equipments to take advantage of the fishing opportunities in Somali waters according to European Union.
The first face of the program was today launched in Hargaise, Somaliland’s capital. The project is scheduled to be launched later in Puntland .
Michele Cervone d’Urso, European Union envoy to Somalia also stressed that there are great opportunities of fishing in Somalia and is not utilized yet.
However Fishing valued to 300 million $ is reported to have been taken from Somali waters by unauthorized foreign companies due to the lack of functioning Somali coast guard since the fall of Somalia’s central government in early 90s.
