Somalia defense minister reaches agreement with Ahlusuna group in Gedo region.

Mogadishu (RBC) In an agreement signed in Garbaharey town, the provincial capital of Gedo region the moderate Sufi group of Ahlusuna agreed to merge their militias into the Somali National Army, RBC Radio reports.

Somalia minister of defense Abdihakim Mohamud Fiqi and Ahlusuna commander of Gedo region Sheikh Mohamed Hussein Al Qaadi both signed the agreement during Sunday meeting in Garbaharey town.

“The government will have the leading, training and re-equipping the troops.” the agreement mentioned.

The agreement which came during the prime minister’s Gedo tour did not figure out the number of the militias that the group had so far.

The moderate Somalia paramilitary group has been battling against Al Shabab, which is an Al Qaeda affiliated group since 2007. The group was seen as the biggest armed allied militia in the battle against Al Shabab and Al Qaeda.

There have been numerous agreements between the group and the former transitional government of Somalia which sometime were desecrated and did not come into practice but this time the defense minister says the agreement will direct the end of the armed groups in the country.
