SOMALIA: National Dialogue on Justice Reform starts in Mogadishu

Mogadishu (RBC) For more than two decades of anarchy in Somalia, a meeting aimed to reform the country’s corrupt judicial system has started on Monday in the capital, Mogadishu, RBC Radio reports.

The meeting which is hosted by the federal government of Somalia is due to take five days and has attracted dozens of law expertise around the world, native Somali lawyers, representatives from regional states to contribute valuable solutions to a wider reform expected to occur within months.

After returning back from abroad, Somalia president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has addressed at the opening session of the meeting and called for the participants to gather the possible and paramount manners to overcome the challenges faced from the judiciary system of the country.

“Our country has not only plunged into civil wars in 1991 but also anarchy which succumbed the credibility of our justice system.” President Mohamud said.

“Somali people need a full and functioning justice that is trusted by them more than they need water and food.” He added.

Abdulahi Abyan Nur, the country’s justice minister described the meeting as division of president Mohamud’s six pillar policy that aimed to secure progress, peace and justice in this horn of Africa nation.

Meanwhile, Somalia chief justice Aidid Abdullahi Ilkahanaf posed to the participants to come up with noticeable suggestions as he promised that the recommendations from the meeting will be executed soon.

RBC Radio reporter in Mogadishu says the participants of this meeting were expected to present a number of recommendations that will be helpful to the government before inducting its proposed reform on the country’s justice.
