Hargeysa (RBC) A court in Hargeysa town of Somalia’s break away region of Somaliland has sentenced one year jail term and $150 fine to Sheikh Mohamud Abdullahi Gelle who was detained since early 2012, Raxanreeb Online reports.
Sheikh Gelle was charged with crimes against Somaliland government and organizing a religious political party in Somaliland in December 2012.
The court verdict came in aclosed sesseion on Sunday in Hargeysa town where only relatives and court judges were allowed to listen the court decision.
“The court sentenced Sheikh Mohamud Abdullahi Gelle for one year in jail and also fined him with one million Shillings.” Hargeysa regional court judge, Osman Ibrahim Dahir announced the decision.
The lawyer in defense who spoke to Raxanreeb reporter said that he was not given any opportunity to comment against the ruling of Sunday’s court.
Sheikh Gelle was seen outside of the court room wearing white robe and head gear as he he was holding the Quran on his right hand and the other with his mattress to sleep in the central prison where he was ecorted. He did not spoke to the media.
Sheikh Gelle was arrested in December 2012 few days after forming his new religious political party “Hisbullah” in Hargeysa and was questioned by intelligence officers. He was taken to court for several times since then but the court had always adjourned the hearing of the charges against him.
