Addis Ababa (RBC) IGAD’s Executive Secretary has reiterated the Somalia’s government appeal for international aid following heavy Cyclone that hit Puntland regions of Northeastern Somalia and the floods that sparked across some of the southern regions of the horn of African country.
“Given the extent of the effects of the flood, the capacity of the government of Somalia is limited. I, therefore, on behalf of IGAD, appeal to the donor governments, IGAD member states, humanitarian agencies, [and] international and regional organizations to respond positively and expeditiously to the appeal made by the government of Somalia.”
Somalia Federal Government had earlier appealed to the International Community to help those affected in the storms and the floods inside the country.
Meanwhile the Head of the OCHA office for Somalia Justin Brady, said that he was pleased that strong coordination among the humanitarian community and Puntland authorities had led to a good emergency response to the nearly 30,000 people affected by the tropical storm since 11 November.
He said OCHA now look forward to establishing medium-to-longer-term needs for affected communities to support and rebuild lost livelihoods including the restocking of livestock.
