Local Residents Organize 5K Walk for Charity

This Saturday, May 19 residents from across the Maryland, DC, and Virginia area will participate in a 5K walk to be held at Lake Fairfax in Reston, VA. The walk is being held to create awareness for Leeban Hamud, a former resident of Fairfax County who suffered a traumatic brain injury in Minnesota. The walk will raise funds for his medical transport to VA.

On Jan. 20th, 2013, Leeban was involved in a terrible accident. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and currently remains in a coma. As a result, he requires an air ambulance to transport him from Minnesota to Virginia. Team Lee-a group of close friends and family, aims to raise $20,000 to bring him closer to home so he can continue down the long road to recovery with the invaluable support of family and friends.

Team Lee urges all VA residents to use their collective gift of health to dramatically change the life of one young man, and to create awareness about the estimated 1.7 million traumatic brain injury cases a year.

Team Lee has raised over $8,000 towards its $20,000 goal. In the last 3 weeks the campaign is generating support from all kinds of communities and individuals with its presence on various social networking sites such as Twitter (@Walk4lee) and Facebook-reaching thousands of potential walkers. The campaign’s popularity and important cause have garnered sponsorships from companies such as Honest Tea, Vita Coco, Juba Express, Everyday People (NYC), Favored by Yodit, Tropical Smoothie Café, Dahabshiil, Guernsey and La Tingaria Food Truck.

Walk4Lee organizer Fahmo Mahamud is hopeful, “We are looking forward to an event that will aid the family and provide an opportunity for all participants, walkers and sponsors, to walk united for a worthy cause.”
