Nairobi (RBC) The leaders of Ethiopia and Kenya governments have agreed to help reconstruct the neighboring country of Somalia through in co-operation with the Somalia federal government after meeting in Nairobi on Wednesday, RBC Radio reports.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn met in Nairobi on Wednesday discussing various issues concerning the two countries and as well as the security situation in the region as whole.

“Kenya and Ethiopia remain strategic partners, especially within the IGAD framework in the search for peace and political stability of Somalia,” said President Kenyatta said while voicing regret that the two countries continued to bear the burden of hosting hundreds of thousands of refugees occasioned by the long-standing crisis that has afflicted Somalia more than 20 years.

On his side Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said that his country was committed improving matters relating to the African Union, of which Hailemariam is the current chairperson.

Mr. Hailemariam did not mention recent remarks by news agencies which he said that his country’s forces will begin to pull out from Somalia. But Ethiopian foreign ministry spokesman Dina Mufti, clarifying the prime minister’s speech on Tuesday, said that Ethiopian forces are not planning to pull out of the country, as reported by VOA.

The two countries, Ethiopia and Kenya sent their troops to Somalia to fight against Al Shabab militant group.
