Mogadishu (RBC) UK’s Foreign Secretary William Hague together with Somalia Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon have on Thursday announced the reopening of British embassy in Mogadishu which was closed since 1991, when the civil war broke out in Somalia, RBC Radio reports.
“I congratulate the Foreign Secretary on opening the British Embassy in Somalia, a strong sign of the improving situation that other countries would note and follow.” Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon said after meeting with the UK high level officials visiting Mogadishu on Thursday.
British Foreign Secretary William Hague said that ahead of the upcoming London Somalia Conference it was important for UK to resume its diplomatic mission in Somalia.
“UK is committed to be strong friend to Somalia and its people.” Secretary Hague said.
There was already British ambassador to Somalia Matt Baugh but has been mostly based in Nairobi, the capital of the neighboring country.
Last week the federal government of Somalia also appointed Abdullahi Mohamed Ali Sanbaloolshe as Somalia’s first Ambassador to the UK in many years.
Meanwhile on Thursday, Somalia foreign minister Ms. Fawsiya Yusuf Haji Aden received her UAE’s counterpart in Mogadishu.
