Press Release: PDF Supports Jubbaland State Conference at Kismayo

Puntland Diaspora Forum (PDF) congratulates the people of Jubbaland on their effort to establish an inclusive, federal state for the three regions of Jubbada Hoose, Jubbada Dhexe and Gedo. PDF welcomes the adoption of the Jubbaland State Charter and commencement of next and final phase of the conference to select the leader of the state and its parliament. PDF believes that all communities in these regions are fully represented in the conference at Kismayo, that the conference reflects the direction of federal constitution, and that the conference is completely in line with the national priority of the country regarding social reconciliation, trust building and conflict resolution.
Although PDF is disappointed in President Hassan Sheekh and Prime Minister Shirdoon’s failure to appreciate the political and security milestones Kismayo Conference thus far made, PDF is still hopeful that both leaders will ultimately endorse the ongoing conference and support its outcome. Kismayo conference represents a great opportunity for the federal government to show its commitment for the federal framework upon which current federal institutions are founded. A continued failure on the part of President Hassan and Prime Minister Shirdoon to recognize the legitimate, constitutional, aspirations of the great Jubbaland communities to establish their local administration will sadly result in an unnecessary security and political setback to the fight against alshabaab, and will impede Somalia’s progress toward normalcy.
PDF reminds the Federal Parliament to play its role in encouraging the establishment of federal states to complete the revival of new Somalia. PDF commends the parliamentarian delegates that visited Kismayo conference to show their support for the grassroots gathering and democratic deliberation taking place in the conference venue. PDF also commends the political and moral support Puntland administration gave to the Jubbaland State initiative.
Finally, PDF fully supports the creation of federal states throughout Somalia according to the federal constitution. PDF believes local governance is the only practical model that could give birth to a strong, united, and democratic Somalia.
