NUSOJ Condemns the Murder of a journalist and Human Rights Lawyers in Mogadishu

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) is shocked to learn the murder of a Somali journalist and two prominent advocates for Human Rights during the regional court attack on Saturday 14, April, 2013 and condemns the murder in the strongest terms possible.
A Somali journalist, Mohamed Hassan Habeeb, who was the media advisor to the courts, and has worked several media houses including the state run Radio Mogadishu was among the killed in Saturday’s attack, bringing the number of the journalists killed this year to three. Late Habeeb becomes the third journalist killed in Somalia this year.
Prof. Mohamed Mohamud Afrah, Head of Somali Lawyers Assocition and Avv. Abdikarin Hassan Gorod, who were human rights defenders and remembered for their brilliant role in defending the Somali journalist, Abdiasis Abdinur Ibrahim, who was accused of interviewing a rape victim and the rape victim among other cases, were killed in the attack.
“We mourn the loss of our colleague and the human rights advocates.” Mohamed Ibrahim, Secretary General of the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) said, “On behalf of Somali Journalists, I send my sincere sympathies and condolences to the families, friends and colleague of our colleagues.”
Late Mohamed Hassan Habeb becomes the third journalist killed this year alone.
In a separate incident, the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) welcomes the decision by the Somali Military to sentence the killer of late Hassan Yusuf Absuge, who was killed in Mogadishu last September and urges the Somali government to bring to book the other journalists’ killers.
