Mogadishu (RBC) The African Union Forces in Somalia [AMISOM] declared that they will vacate the privately owned buildings based by its troops in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, the mission’s spokesman said on Saturday.

Since at the beginning of the African Union Mission in Somalia in 2007, AMISOM peacekeepers were stationed in various buildings included those were privately owned but as the tranquility begun to return into the country, many citizens moved back and demanded to have their homes back.

“We have recently started to leave from the privately owned buildings  in recognizing that the owners need their houses.” Colonel Ali Aden Houmud told reporters in a press conference in Mogadishu.

The spokesman also highlighted that many citizens were relocating back to the capital following the peace and security returning back to Mogadishu and that there were calls from the people to give back their houses.

Meanwhile AMISOM spokesman hailed the recent pledge from the U.S government to provide military weapons to Somali government after easing the two decades UN arms embargo on Somalia.

“AMISOM will contribute based on its capability to equip and organize Somalia’s security forces”. Coloned Houmed added.
