SOMALIA: Mogadishu residents tell PM to carry out security reform campaign

IMG_0570Mogadishu (RBC) Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed has today met with the residents of four Mogadishu district as the first pay of a wider public consultation campaign projected by the Prime Minister’s office to tighten the security of Mogadishu.

In a closed meeting with more than 150 members of the society told the Prime Minister to reform the security officials as they also recommended to for many officers of the National Intelligence and Police commands.

The members of the society who have attended the meeting strongly said that they were disappointed how many officers of the government were money-oriented instead of task-oriented.

Some even worried that several occasions Al Shabab members were released from prisons after the officers in charge for their prosecution were bribed while others were released through clan influence.

The names and identities of those attend this meeting were not publicized because of the sensitivity of today’s meeting.

At the end of the meeting the Prime Minister said he was very happy to hold such gathering with Mogadishu community as he also noted that even his security advisers did not provide such valuable recommendations.

“I will take note all hat you told me and I strongly promise if your confidentiality,” the Prime Minister said.

According to one elder who attend today public consultation gathering in Hamarjajab neighborhood, the residents were also angry that government officials repeatedly claim that the society were not helpful in order to tackle terrorist attacks while the government’s security sector was not prepared to cooperate with the community.

The meeting is the first of series of meetings which the Prime Minister and members of the cabinet will listen to the residents of different districts of the capital.
