Rome (RBC) Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and high level government delegation paid first official visit to the Republic of Italy after the European Union conference on Somalia New Deal, RBC Radio reports.
On Wednesday, Somali president was highly received by the Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta in his office in Rome. The two officials then held a joint press conference.
“I am very glad to receive the president of Somali republic here in Rome, and it is a historic visit.” Prime Minister Letta said.
Prime Minister Letta promised that his government will fully stand side by side with the federal government of Somalia as he suggested to host a mini-summit for Somalia during the United Nations General Assembly this year in New York.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has paid his gratitude to the people and the government of Italia as he also said that Somalia still remembers the long time relation between Somalia and Italy.
“Due to the long time relation, Italy can contribute more to help Somalia.” president Mohamud said.
Meanwhile the defense minister of Somalia and his Italian counterpart signed a military agreement which Italy will help the training and re-equipping the national army of Somalia.
The agreement says that, after UN lifted the arms embargo on Somalia, Italy will help the capacity building and equipping the national army of Somalia.
This agreement becomes first bilateral agreement between Italian government and Somalia since the collapse of late Somalia central government in 1991.
