Beledweyn (RBC) Somali government forces have launched daytime search operation in Beledweyn town, central Somalia after unidentified gunmen have shot and killed an elder on Wednesday night, RBC Radio reports.
At least 16 people were arrested including suspects of Al Shabab, the deputy governor of the Hiran region said. The detained persons are being interrogated in the police station.
The operation commenced early morning after well known traditional elder Abdulle Macalin was assassinated by unidentified gunmen who fled immediately from the place of the killing.
The killed elder has took part in forming the new federal government of the country last year as he also helped selecting the members of the parliament of Somalia.
Hiran police commissioner Colonel Isaq Ali Abdulle said the police were investigating the killing. He said Al Shabab has been always responsible for targeting the elders.
Nio group claimed the responsibility of the killing yet.
RBC Radio
