Mogadishu (RBC) The leader of the interim administration in Jubba regions of Somalia Ahmed Mohamed Islam (known as Madobe) has met the detained Islamic leader Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys in Mogadishu, RBC Radio reports.
The meeting which is the first since 2009 took place at the National Security Headquarters in Mogadishu.
According to sources close to the meeting, Ahmed Madobe has visited Sheikh Aweys in his room inside the headquarters where he is detained since June when he surrendered to the federal government of Somalia.
Madobe is lobbying for the release of Sheikg Aweys, the sources said.
Somali government has been reluctant to release the former Islamist member Sheikh Aweys despite growing pressure from relatives, clan elders and friends.
The meeting came as Ahmed Madobe visited Mogadishu on Saturday for more than five years to end bitter tension with the central government over Jubba administration.
