Cadaao (RBC) Pirates in Somalia have released six foreigners held hostage in central Somalia for more than two years, RBC Radio reports.

Two Danes and four Filipinos who were held hostage in Somalia since early 2011 after their ship was attacked by pirates, were freed from their hostages.

According to AP the Danish government has confirmed the release of two Danes and four Filipinos on Tuesday.

Foreign Minister Villy Soevndal says the six men were safe on board a Danish navy ship off Somalia, but did not give further details. He said Denmark had not paid a ransom for the hostages.

Defense Minister Nick Haekkerup said Tuesday that Danish commandoes were sent to Somalia to pick up the hostages, but also declined to elaborate.

The six men were taken hostage from a Danish cargo ship M.V Leopard when it was attacked by pirates on Jan. 12, 2011, off Somalia.

Somali pirate sources said the six men were released on Monday after long negotiation with the company that owns the ship. The sources said they have received a ransom money on Sunday night but did not mention the amount.

The ransom money was given to the pirates through unidentified channel in Kenya.
