Djibouti (RBC) In his attempts to develop his country’s football from the very bottom, President Souleiman Hassan Waberi has realised his past dreams of creating beach soccer development committee which successfully organized the first ever beach soccer tournament in Djibouti’s football history.
A very colourful ceremony which intended to mark on the launching of the tournament was held at the SIESTA beach resort of Djibouti where the tournament is taking place. The tournament has gathered 8 Division A clubs.
Officials from the ministry of sports lead by director General Mohamed Ahmed Omar, President Souleiman Hassan, FIFA instructor Mohamed Hammami, FDF executive committee members, club chairmen and representatives from some sponsoring companies had jointly witnessed the beautiful opening ceremony this week at the SIESTA beach resort.
“The creating of professional beach soccer was what I pledged in front of FIFA and CAF presidents during my trips to Zurich and Cairo—I made the pledges on the behalf of my executive committee members and we are really very happy that our endeavours became successful and our people are now enjoying the beach soccer event for the first time in history” Djibouti Football federation President Souleiman Hassan Waberi told the media during the launching ceremony of the tournament.
“Our people have been playing football at the beach a long time ago, but this is a professional tournament we are holding for the first time in the history of football in the country—we are very proud to be the pioneers of the creation of beach soccer in Djibouti” President Souleiman explained during his address at the opening ceremony.
He said that Djibouti was hopeful to have its strong beach soccer national team in two years time. “Our country had never appeared in international beach soccer competition, but we expect that will happen within the mentioned period” the president emphasized.
Football club authorities in the country who were reached for comment by the CECAFA media showed their pleasure in the implementation of the professional event which has attracted the attention of so many people in the country.
“On behalf of the club authorities here in Djibouti I declare that football in Djibouti is rapidly growing and that the creation of beach soccer in our country was something very encouraging for us and as well as for our fans who are very happy with such fruitful initiative by our president Souleiman Hassan Waberi” CDE/Colas FC secretary General Aden Ahmed Miguil said.
