Mahaday (RBC) An extremely heavy rains in Somalia’s Middle Shabelle caused the already swollen Shabelle River to overflow into Mahaday town north of Jowhar town, the provincial capital of the region, locals said.

As more rains are expected to carry on in April, the residents of Mahaday town and surrounding villages begun to flee from their homes fearing huge floods water may affect their lives.

“The river seems to continue its flooding and there are no any emergency efforts to rescue the people.” Abdirahman Ahmed, a community elder in Mahaday told RBC Radio on the phone.

He adds that the community had not an access to floods prevention mechanisms or mitigating measures which include closing intentional breaches in riverbanks and building dams to cross the overflow of water into the town.

Thousands of people living in the town are supposed to affect if the Shabelle River maintains to break its banks in the coming weeks.

In Somalia, during the rainy seasons floods are common in the towns where the river level is at full crest.

In October last year, heavy floods took place in Beledweyn, a central Somalia town killed more than 20 people.
