Beledweyn (RBC) A newly appointed governor for Somalia’s central region of Hiiraan has today landed at Beledweyn town where he is supposed to take over the administration office, RBC Radio reports.
Mr. Abdi Farah Laqanyo, the cousin of former Somali ambassador to Ethiopia and the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa was nominated as the new Hiiraan governor two months earlier. The former governor Abdifatah Hassan Farah was sacked from the office after locals alleged him human rights abuses against civilians and mismanagement.
The interior minister also fired Beledweyn district commissioner, local security officers and head of department of the regional administration for the same allegations.
On Sunday, large government delegates led by Somali minister for resources Abdirisak Omar Mohamed reached the town of Beledweyn, where the new governor is presumed to take over the office as the governor of Hiiraan region.
Local sources claim that the former governor has been reluctant to hand over the office demanding from the central government to repay for millions of dollars of loans incurred during his two years term in office.
