SOMALIA: Puntland appeals for security backing to defeat Al Shabab

Mogadishu (RBC) The authorities of northern Somalia’s semi-autonomous state of Puntland appealed for security assistance to defeat the Al Shabab militants pouring into its territory, minister of justice said.

“Puntland feels an extensive need for support in terms of security and justice from the federal government of Somalia.” Yusuf Ahmed Kheyr, Puntland state minister for justice said addressing at a meeting aimed to reform the country;s justice system held in Mogadishu.

The minister also cautioned that the administration in Puntland can not only defend against the militants and therefore needed for a full scale assistance from the federal government.

“I wish to remind the president of Somalia to send resources and experts of law and security to train the local security forces in Puntland” the minister suggested.

The call from Puntland came after the federal government of Somalia received the first military donation from the neighboring Djibouti last week to rebuild the security forces of the war torn country of Somalia.

Since last year after a heavy military assault in the southern parts of Somalia,  A number of Al Shabab militants, including senior officials, have been moving north to the mountains of semi-autonomous region of Puntland after being pushed out of may of their strongholds in the southern and central Somalia.

In April last year The leader of Puntland Abdirahman Mohamed Farole has voiced that Al Shabab fighters and commanders have been pouring into Galgala mountains west of Bosasso town to to strengthen ties with Al Qaeda in Yemen.
