Ali Haji Warsame, a businessman associated with Golis Telecom and one of Puntland presidential candidates is coming under fire for failing to address his alleged past membership of now-defunct Al Itihaad organisation , which ruled North eastern regions of Somalia between 1991 and 1992, and fought Somali Salvation Democratic Front to keep its grip on Bosaso port. Mr Warsame is alleged to have been in charge of the group’s finances generated from Bosaso port.
Ali’s brother, Ismail Haji Warsame, onetime chief of staff for the late Somali president Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed when the latter was Puntland president , recently wrote an article critical of president Farole and Professor Abdiweli Ali, also a Puntland presidential candidate to boost his brother’s chance of winning Puntland presidency.
It was a fair game to call president Yusuf’s erstwhile political enemies ‘ rejuvenated Al Itihaad members.’ Ali Haji is now fortunate to void that designation but his silence on allegations that he was a member of Al Itihaad is damaging his candidacy. He should either own up to his past or lay rumours to rest.
