Mogadishu (RBC) Somali government forces backed by the African Union Troops have on Sunday taken over the town of Mahaday, 90 kms from Jowhar town, the regional capital of Middle Shabelle region.
A heavy fighting erupted early in the morning near the town where Al Shabab rebel group had been controlling for more than five years.
Mahad district commissioner said the forces took over the town without greater resistance.
“After they have realized that the joint forces were approaching, Al Shabab torn up the river banks and released the water.” The district commissioner said.
According to locals, the joint forces fully seized the control of the three divisions of the town and then begun to mitigate flooding water from the Shabelle river.
The security situation of the town was reportedly calm.
