Mogadishu (RBC) The American-born Al Shabab fighter Omar Hamami was killed on Thursday near Baardhere town of southern Somalia after an attack by Al Shabab fighters, RBC Radio reports.
Omar Hamami (who is known as Abu Mansur Al Amriki) was confirmed dead after heavy fighting between him and Al Shabab fighters who have attacked on his hideout at Shongolow village. The militants also killed three other men including Omar Hamami’s brother-in-law and a British Al Shabab member.
According to residents in the area, there was heavy gun battle early on Thursday at the small village of Shongolow between Somalia’s Gedo and Baay regions.
Al Shabab press office did not comment on the killing against Omar Hamami. Hamami himself has earlier said he was afraid that Al Shabab’s leader Ahmed Godane will kill him because of he was opposing his strict interpretation of Sharia.
The split between Al Shabab leaders have become public after senior commanders of the group have opposed the strict ideology of the group’s leader Ahmed Godane. In June Ahmed Godane’s militia assassinated two senior leaders Ibrahim Afghani and Sheikh Burham in the town of Barawe.
