SOMALIA: Government announces end of clan based conflict in Lower Shabelle region

Mogadishu (RBC) Somali government has said that it has ended clan based conflict in the Lower Shabelle region which led to the death of dozens in the past three months.

“After large and very inclusive conference in Marka town of Lower Shabelle region we are able to declare the end of armed conflicts in the region.” Colonel Ali Abtidon, the Director General of the interior and national security ministry said.

Lower Shabelle region, as one of the most resourceful in southern Somalia has been a hot spot for different clans vying for its control and there have been recurring armed conflicts in many districts in the region.

Currently government delegates from Mogadishu are visiting the region to follow up the recent peace agreement between the rival clans.

“The clan leaders here agreed also to terminate any armed conflict in the future and solve any differences which may arise in a peaceful manner rather than gun battle.” The DG of the interior and national security ministry added.

Meanwhile the officials said they have removed more than twenty illegal checkpoints that were set up by armed men to earn money from the local transportation.
