Mogadishu, August 22, 2013 – Council of Ministers meeting chaired by His Excellency Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon today condemned the attack targeted the Swedish politicians in Mogadishu and sent condolences to the families of the victims, Swedish government the people. The council of ministers also requested from the UN Security Council to lift sanctions against Somali businessman Mr. Ahmed Ali Jim’ale former chairman of Barakat Bank.

“I condemn the attack in the strongest terms and send my condolences to the families of the Swedish politicians attacked in Mogadishu yesterday. I urge the security forces to protect our friends and partners visiting and working in Somalia,” Prime Minister said. He stated that they are very important for the speedy recovery of Somalia and that such an attacks will leave no stone unturned to keep our citizens safe.

Somalia Interior Minister H.E. Abdikarin Hussein Gulled briefed the council of ministers on a comprehensive investigation carried out on Mr. Jim’ale’s UNSC Sanctions Committee allegation dating back on February 17, and 25 August, 2012. The minister reported the findings of the independent committee consisting of; Somali Government officials, religious leaders, business community leaders, nongovernmental organizations and officials from neighboring country Djibouti.

“The investigation team has received testimonies both in verbal questioning and in writing and concluded that there is no enough evidence to continue the sanctions against Mr. Jim’ale,” H.E. Abdikarin said. He thanked the council for endorsing the report and called up on UNSC to reconsider the sanction imposed on Mr. Jim’ale.

The minister stated that the investigations covered all relevant files, documents, past judgments and interviews with Jim’ale, and others who provided qualified and authenticated information. He concluded that the Somali government’s judgement is fair and legitimate and the findings of the report authorized to be published.
