MOGADISHU (RBC) Somalia security officials have vowed on Monday that they will eliminate the illegal roadblocks that were set up by the government forces on the main highways between the capital, Mogadishu and some parts of the Lower Shabelle and Middle Shabelle regions, RBC Radio reports.
“The security forces and the military are ready to respond quickly to the complaints from our citizens.” Gen. Abdirisak Khalif Elmi, the commanding officer of Somalia military command said today in a press conference in Mogadishu.
There had been growing allegations of armed forces setting illegal roadblocks to embezzle cash from local buses and trucks but Gen. Elmi said that the military command had formed a committee to probe up such allegations.
“We have now formed new committee to investigate who are the groups behind the roadblocks and the rape against women and soon we shall take possible steps forward .” he added.
On Sunday, The drivers of the local buses and truck between Mogadishu and Afgooye went on strike and complained that the government and the Lower Shabelle regional administration did not listen them despite several calls on immediate intervention to the illegal roadblocks they made previously.
AMISOM troops conducted on Sunday morning the first anti-roadblocks operation between Afgooye and Marka where they have dispersed armed militias from the main roads allowing free transportation.
Somali military chief has earlier warned that any soldier found on putting roadblocks will face harsh punishment but local media report even more roadblocks being set up these days by uniformed government soldiers.
