MOGADISHU (RBC) Thousands of Somali people in Mogadishu have gathered and celebrated on Tuesday following the opening of the international conference on Somalia in London that focuses the country’s rebuild, RBC Radio reports.
Thousands of women, students, workers and government officials gathered near the SYL status that marked the 13 Somali youths those fought for the country’s Independence in 1960 to show support for the British hosted conference started in London’s Lancaster house early today.
“The London conference is not foreign led conference for Somalia, it is a Somali led initiative and the world to listen our demands and priorities.” Somalia Prime minister Abdi Farah Shirdon who gave speech to the demonstrators said today.
“We are very grateful to UK for hosting the meeting and our partners for joining the international attention towards the rebuild of our country.” The prime minister added.
The flags of Somalia and the UK were put on the main roads. The portraits of Somalia president and the British prime minister were also put on the place as women wearing the uniform were seen on the streets heading to the demonstration spot.
“Today is a big day for us, we have now full government which is not transition and the London Conference is deciding the future of Somalia with development.” Asha Yarey, a student at Mogadishu university said.
Security in the capital was tightened as more police forces were deployed into the main streets since Monday.
Separately, dozens of people were seen on the sides of the roads in Mogadishu watching the TV screens to go with the proceedings of the Conference at Lancaster House where millions of dollars were pledged to support Somalia.
“The government needs to administer well its resources and the support from the international community.” Abdurahman Yusuf, who lives in Mogadishu said.
