Somalia: Public consultation on human rights issues begins in Mogadishu

Mogadishu (RBC) The first public consultation on Somalia human rights issues has begun in Mogadishu on Sunday which a sub-committee in Somalia Federal Parliament on Human rights and Humanitarian called for early this week, RBC Radio reports.

The public consultation was officially opened by the deputy speaker of Somalia Federal Parliament Jeylani Nur Iikar who emphasized the need to parliamentary move to improve the human rights issues in Somalia.

MP Abdirahman Hoosh Jibril, member of parliamentary committee on human rights and humanitarian said that the public consultation aimed to hear views and comments from different segments of the society and the issues focused during the public consultation will be included gender based violence, rapid rape cases, assassination of journalists in Somalia and the internal displaced people.

The chairperson of the parliamentary committee on human rights and humanitarian, Khadija Mohamed Diiriye who addressed at the meeting highlighted the purpose of the meeting was to get inner understanding on the human rights violations and the proper way to solve them.

“As a parliamentary committee we are assigned to gather the violation against human rights and we want to raise to the parliament in order to ask the government to do something.” Khadija added.

For the first time the journalists in Somalia welcomed the meeting and called for the parliament to pressure the police and justice to probe up 22 journalists assassinated in the country in the past 16 months.
