The president of Somali federal republic Hassan Shekh Mahmud and the president of self-declared republic of Somaliland Mr Mohamed Mahamud Siilanyo will meet later today in Istanbul, Turkey. The meeting is organized by Turkey and aimed at resuming Somalia and Somaliland talks which started in 2012.
Delegates from both parties have been meeting in Istanbul in the last two days to prepare and decide on main issues the two leaders will have to address in their meeting. Negotiations are the third in their kind since they started in mid last year.
According to some analysts there’s nothing much expected from this round of talks apart from agreeing on the continuation of the talks and increasing mutual cooperation on regional security.
Somaliland had announced it seceded from Somalia in 1991 and since then it’s looking for recognition from international community but so far no country has recognized it as a sovereign country.
