Mogadishu (RBC) At least 11 people were killed today in a clan-based clashes in Lower Shabelle region of southern Somalia, where armed militias are confronting for the control of key towns, RBC Radio reports.
The Saturday’s clashes started following high tension in the region in the past week, according to regional governor Mohamed Abdukadir Nur.
The clashes affected hundreds of residents and farmers in El-Waergow, Shalanbod and Janale towns, which are part of the newly liberated districts of the region by the Somali National Army backed by the African Union Forces in Somalia in the past months from Al Shabab.
“We are very upset by these wicked clashes. We call for immediate cease,” Governor Nur said.
He has blamed that armed gangs are involving in these clashes to aim looting and displacing the civilians.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed has this afternoon held urgent meeting with Members of the Parliament and elders from the clans to pressure them to help cease the ongoing cashes in the region.
