Omar Faruk OsmanMogadishu (RBC) Omar Faruk Osman who was sacked from his position as the Secretary General of the National Union of Somali Journalists in 2011 has critically condemned the Somali government and the international community backing the federal government.

Faruk interviewed by Radio Shabelle soon after he was released on bail on Sunday afternoon from the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters in Mogadishu said that his arrest was behind local journalists opposing him.

“I am very upset on what happened today afternoon [Sunday]. I was arrested by the CID police while I was in my hotel, and that was nothing except a bare attempt to humiliate me.” He told in the interview.

Asked about why he was arrested, he said that he did not understand but when he reached the CID headquarters he was told that the police had a warrant arrest against him.

“When I reached the CID office I asked why I was detained, they [police] told me that they have a warrant arrest issued by the regional court.” Faruk said.

“You know these days there had been a group of local journalists trying to create upraising against our leadership but that will bring nothing. Everyone who seeks support from foreigners will fail.” He added.

Killing of journalists

“In the past three years dozens of my colleagues were killed in the country by these armed so-called security forces and I believe that I am not better than those who were assassinated in the line of duty.” Faruk added.

The former Secretary General of the National Union of Somali Journalists warned what he described as foreign hands meddling Somalia matters.

“The so-called international community failed already and now they are making trouble in the matters of the journalists. We keep them on the eye and we have warned them always”.

He said the United Nations, the European Union, the US government, the UK government, the Australian government and the African Union Mission [AMISOM] followed by Information Support Team IST were trying to create mess on the new draft media law of Somalia.

“Foreigners can do nothing for this country.” He concluded adding that Somali journalists will resist back against every foreign hand.
