Mogadishu (RBC) The president of Somalia Federal Government Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has wrapped up his two days visit to the country’s northeastern region of Puntland with failing to reach consensus on some points during talks with the Puntland leader, sources tell RBC Radio.
President Hassan and his delegation of Ministers and MPs landed Garowe town, the capital of Puntland on Sunday to discuss various issues including security and reconciliation, upcoming Somalia Conference in London as well issues concerning the widely contested Kismayo conference, an initiative which the federal government said is was “unconstitutional”.
On Monday afternoon both sides hold a joint press conference in Garowe, whereby president Hassan Sheikh said he was committed to honour and implement the Memorandum of Understanding signed last month and other previous agreements, and to work together towards reconciliation and the unity of the Somali people.
On his side the president of Puntland touched down that the two days discussions were highly appreciated despite there were some remaining issues.
According to Puntland spokesman Ahmed Omar, President Hassan and president Faroole disagreed three main issues including the role of Puntland to attend the upcoming Somalia Conference in London which Puntland demanded to have its role s regional state and the Kismaayo Conference the federal government insists to be stopped and instead to appoint a regional level administration.
Both sides also differed towards the amendment made by the federal parliament in last September on some articles in the federal constitution which Puntland opposed and urged as against the base-building of new federal republic in Somalia.
A statement from the office of Somali president shortly after he returned back to Mogadishu Monday Afternoon noted that the President briefed the President of Puntland on the London Conference (7th May), stressed that this will be co-chaired by Somalia and the United Kingdom. The objective is to support the priorities of the Federal Government, namely security sector reform, judicial reform and improved public finance management.
According the sources, President Hassan and the leader of Puntland both confirmed the disagreed points to postponed for later talks.
