MESSAGGE BY THE ITALIAN AMBASSADOR TO SOMALIA ON THE KILLING OF SENIOR JOURNALIST MOHAMED IBRAHIM RAGEH
Press Release
Nairobi, 22nd April 2013 – The Ambassador and Special Delegate of the Italian Government to the Somali Republic, Mr. Andrea Mazzella, expresses his firm condemnation of the barbaric murder of the journalist Ibrahim Mohamed Rageh, killed yesterday in Mogadishu.
The high toll paid by journalists in Somalia and the courage with which they nevertheless continue their work, with a very high sense of responsibility, even at the cost of their own life, is a tangible sign that the Somali people will never accept to bow to those who want to impose their rule by terror and violence.
At this critical junction of the tormented journey of the Somali people towards peace, I express my deepest condolences and closeness to all the families of the many journalists who were victims of terrorism, and I appeal to the population to be closer to and to support at their best the legitimate Federal Institutions in the fight against terror.
Only through the unconditional support of the civilian population, which condemns, dissociates from, and completely isolates those who use violence as a means to reach political goals, it will be possible to re-establish adequate security conditions in Somalia and to finally achieve the peace which the Somali people deserves, after too many years of long suffering.
